In the summer of their tenth year, Dunnell Robertson Partnership decided that, rather than throw a lavish party, they would invest time in a charity project.  This arrived at their door through client, John Knight, who provides veterinary consultancy to the Born Free Foundation and was looking to work with an architect locally to develop a lion sanctuary in Ethiopia.

The proposal is to develop a sanctuary to home and care for lions from Ethiopia mainly where they are currently being kept in less than ideal conditions.  Initially, Born Free were promised some land not far from Addis, however, this offer was withdrawn due to a change in political circumstances, but is now back on the table and work is underway in Ethiopia at present to cement the handover of the land before the project can be fully put into action.

This Guernsey “lion” connection has recently been reinforced further when John arranged for two ten month old lion cubs rescued from Romania to be temporarily housed at the Guernsey Animal Shelter whilst they are “dehumanised” and readied for release into the Born Free Sanctuary in South Africa.  If all goes to plan in Ethiopia, they may end up there in due course.
